Your local Stone Fireplace and Floor Cleaners received a call from Mr Sassoon, regarding his sandstone fireplace. Upon arriving at his property in Leamington Spa we could instantly see the issue he was having. Years of coal burning cracks the seal that is protecting the stone’s surface. Once the stone’s surface is bare the residue left behind from the smoke embeds itself deep within the stone’s pores. This makes it a very tricky job then to clean, as you are no longer just wiping it off the seal. To restore this beautiful fireplace the seal needs to be fully removed so that the sandstones surface can be cleaned properly.
To start off with we soak the sandstone. Then using a high alkaline product that strips the seal. We apply the solution and leave for ten minutes to begin breaking down the tougher stains. Once the ten minutes is up we can begin scrubbing the stone with hard abrasive nylon and wire brushes. Drawing out all of the soot and grime that is trapped in the stones pores. When all the stains have been removed and the whole fireplace is clean. We rinse down the fireplace removing any excess solution and soiled water. The sandstone has to then fully dry out. This usually takes between 48/72 hours. We highly recommend not using the fireplace during this time as its protective layer has been removed.
When we return we will damp test the fireplace to ensure that it has completely dried. Any moisture will stop the sealant from bonding with the stone properly. We will apply two coats of sealant to give you a more resilient protection. The sealant we use dries instantly although it takes 24 hours to fully cure. Once the curing process is up you can return to using your fireplace as normal.
